Very basic, but gives some peace of mind, January 1, 2008

I bought this kit after doing a lot of research on survival kits. But don’t assume that after all that research, this one came out on top, it is just that the best way seems to be a DIY approach (following lists online), but I had no time/patience to track down every single component of a first-rate kit. This purchase was about convenience, and a starting point.

For that, this kit seems fine. We just moved to Chile and I wanted to have something to keep around the house in case of a big quake, and to take with us on long car trips. I don’t think the gloves are particularly useful (I hope not to find out), and I’ll add more water/food to it and store some at the house. I will also add some more child-specific items, a better knife, and sunblock/hats, and anything else I can think of and come across on the online guides. I also purchased a pocket survival kit that has things like fishing items.

The backpack itself feels very cheap, but I won’t be lugging it around. It is just a place to combine all the items for a quick escape if needed. For that it is fine. The whole kit is a bit heavy, mostly due to the water.

I do recommend this as a starter set, but I would upgrade some of the items to fit your family’s needs, and I would store an additional backpack with water/food if you are in a place with the potential for natural disasters.

OK but with some junk included, zero customer service, May 1, 2011

The kit is reasonably complete and the work gloves and backpack are great ideas. The all-in-one handcrank/solar power source, radio, flashlight, etc. seems like a gadget but it all works and could be very valuable. The “swiss style” multi-blade knife is complete junk – some of the edge tools in it are not even sharpened at all and are useless, and the assembly quality is awful. The Survive-a-Guide was missing from all three kits that I bought. The whistle is likely to be broken just in carrying it around in a pocket.

Customer service is totally unresponsive. They ignored my question that was in the designated spot on the order. I have also sent two messages to their prescribed contact email and had no responses.

I found I can get all the contents, same or better, locally at a camping supply house and will assemble my own kits if I want to secure more in the future. The kit weighs a ton and with shipping factored in the cost will be about the same.

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: ER Emergency Ready 4 Person Ultimate Deluxe Backpack Survival Kit (Sports)

I ordered this kit as a gift for a relative of mine and requested them to thoroughly check the contents of the kit for I read some reviews complaining about missing items.

Not surprisingly, 2 items were missing and I did not even bother filing a complaint due to some reviews complaining about the customer service of the manufacturer. So, I just gave them 3 stars in my feedback to the manufacturer when the order was completed.

Now, to my surprise indeed, few days later I got an email from the manufacturer apologizing for the missing items and informing me that those items were shipped to my relatives.

I just got word from them that they received the package with the items and they were indeed very delighted.

So, I felt I had to write this review to make things right and fair. This manufacturer’s customer service was truly amazing and I would not hesitate to order more kits from them again. Some reviewers said it is basic, oh yeah, but which kit is not “basic” depending on what you would expect from a survival kit?

You must have the basic and them personalize the kit with your own stuff. Don’t pretend that the rest of the world knows your expectations.

I chose this kit because it had – yes – the very basic and much more than other kits I have looked around.

Highly recommend this kit as a basic survival kit. The fancy items you can add them later on.
