An excellent stove for minimilist backpacking. You will find none lighter than this one. I have used this for my trips on the PCT. (100 mile week trips)The stove has performed well every time. I use “Heat” alcohol with this stove and it burns well. A word of caution! be carefull at higher elevations in the wind! You cannot see the flame in an alcohol stove. I lit my down jacket on fire in the High Sierras! I was in wind and the flame from the stove was jumping all ower the place! I didn’t realize the flame had jumped to my jacket until I saw and felt it burning up the arm of my jacket. I could have prevented this with a proper wind shield.

Couple of problems, first, I’ve been unable to ever get the stove to light unless it’s all the way full of fuel. Even when I put a few drops on and around the stove and set it all on fire a la “priming” it- it just wont light unless its topped full. So, you have to fill it all the way up and burn all the fuel you put in, regardless of whether you need to use that much fuel . and forget about trying to pour the fuel back into the bottle, wont work.
That said, it burns extremely well. 10-15 minutes or more easy. Nice small controlled flame.

    Instead,
Go to youtube, and search up fancyfeast cat can stoves and tealight stoves. (can of cat food and a hole punch)I’ve gotten ten minutes out of the fancy feast stove, and you can adjust your fuel for 1 cup , 2 cups, 1 quart etc…I’ve also seen several hiking expert’s websites who only use cat can and tealight stoves on 30 day trips!( take a small tomato paste can, cut out the front and the lid, stick in a tealight, and voila you have a mugstove for $1.50 ) The flame’s a little big, which is a bit of a pain, but I think I’m going to be retiring the Triad and just taking my fancy feast and tealights next time out. google jason klaas and andrew surka for examples
One guy has figured out how to turn the alcohol stove, which can only burn on high, into an adjustable heat stove – google j falk 4 in 1 cat stove. I haven’t tried it yet, but looks good….

I have to admit that I bought this stove as an impulse since I liked the way it looked. I did look at the ratings which weren’t very good but decided to go ahead and try the stove anyway. I’ve been a big fan of Vargo products. I have the Decagon and the Hexagon and love both of them. THEN I decided to try the Triad. Big mistake. First of all the pot rest legs spread way too far apart. What I call “standard” cups like the 700ml Snow Peak don’t really fit well on top of this stove. Very precarious and subject to falling over. Also, the stove sometimes doesn’t bloom at all and other times it takes up to 4 minutes just to bloom – wayyyyy too long since some stoves actually boil 2 cups of water within this time. Stove too is very slow to fill and like the Decagon has to be filled to the top or it won’t work at all. I really wanted this stove to work. It’s light weight and relatively rugged but the quality control (if there is such a process with this stove) is poor. One of the bottom legs was not aligned when it was welded and is therefore permanently bent. I ended up returning the stove!
